Area attractions in Keystone;

Located at the foot of Mt. Rushmore, (the Shrine of Democracy) Keystone is also gateway to the Norbeck Scenic Highway Byway. Included on this drive is Iron Mountain Road with the historical "Pigtail Bridges" and tunnels that frame Mt. Rushmore. You will also pass Lakota Lake that is stocked with 15" and bigger trout and find access to numerous hiking trails that wander through verdant ponderosa pine forests. Meandering year-around creeks offer shady deep pools for a quick dip and unbelievable rock outcrops - all are within easy walking distance of the main road.

You can follow the Hill City Road out of Keystone and watch the historic 1880 train as it makes it way back and forth from Hill City to Keystone. You may even catch a glimpse of a mountain goat, big horn sheep or other wildlife.

Shops abound in Keystone, along with some excellent restaurants, an old time photo shop and taffy shop where you can watch the ancient taffy machine working daily.

From Keystone it is just a short drive to Crazy Horse Memorial, and Custer State Park where the deer, antelope and buffalo roam. You can join the Mickelson Trail system near Mt. Rushmore and hike, bike or horse back ride.

Needles Highway is also part of the Norbeck Scenic Byway, and Sylvan Lake is one of the most beautiful mountain lakes in the USA. The vistas of the Needles are unlike anything else. Hiking trails wind their way through the Cathedral Spires area of the Needles on the way to Harney Peak where you can see all the way out to the Badlands and into Wyoming.

Keystone is located near the center of the Black Hills. It is an easy day trip to the northern and southern hills, making it a logical place to stay.
